There's no magic potion to regain the original luster of your car's interior, but with a little elbow grease and detailing, you can breath new life, and a fresher scent, into tired upholstery.
Automotive upholstery comes in a variety of materials and fabrics including vinyl, leather, cloth and velour. Maintaining the durability and cleanliness of automotive upholstery can be quite expensive, as many upholstery professionals charge expensive rates to remove the smallest stain. Fortunately, there are a number of inexpensive tricks that you can do to clean up the kind of minor accidents you'll encounter during your daily drive.

These automotive upholstery care tips can involve the use of common household products that are easy to use and readily available. However, you must keep in mind that major stains or marks might require the assistance of a professional automotive upholstery service to avoid further damage caused by improper treatment.

* Cleaning Automotive Upholstery
Common automotive upholstery, like many fabrics, can be easily cleaned. Eliminate all surface dust using a small vacuum, and then use a crevice tool for detailing between small cracks and spaces in the upholstery. Leather and vinyl upholstery must be cleaned using a suitable cleaning solution with protector. This added protection helps to maintain a pliable leather surface, and prolongs its beautiful appearance.

* Spills
It's bound to happen to any commuter: you hit the tiniest bump or hit the brakes, and you've got a spill on your upholstery. When it happens, try to soak up as much of the liquid from the surface of the upholstery as you can, as quickly as possible. On cloth or velour seats, use a cotton rag or wads of paper towels to soak up the liquid. You'll need to apply heavy pressure to get as much of the liquid as possible from the upholstery.

* Heavy Stains
Heavy stains can give you a heavy heart, but don't be too quick to bring out stain removing chemicals that can damage upholstery. For most colored stains on automotive upholstery, especially noticeable ones, try dabbing the affected area with a baby wipe. If that does not lift the stain, try pre-treating the spot with a little soda water.

* Odor Removal
Aside from obvious sources like spilled beverages, automotive upholstery can easily pick up odors that circulate throughout the rest of the vehicle. After a while, the scent of the upholstery itself can be quite overwhelming, even after the odorous perpetrator has long since vanished. Cigarettes, drive-thru fast food bags and even innocent cups of coffee will all leave a lasting impression. In most cases, deodorizing sprays can clear the air. Make sure that the windows are open when you spray, to let harmful fumes escape. If your stinky culprit is cigarette smoke, more drastic measures can be in order to drive the odor away. Try to snuff out the smoke smell by shampooing the carpet with a quality commercial product. If the smell persists, you'll need to seek professional help.

* Leather Upholstery Care
There is nothing more luxurious than a car with leather seats. Automotive leather is the pinnacle of upholstery options, but can also be the hardest to maintain. If your automobile is clad in leather, you've already made quite an investment, and you know that it requires meticulous care. Most leather interiors undergo more wear and tear than fine leather furniture, and require the same degree of care. As with any type of leather, automotive leather upholstery reacts unfavorably to extreme temperatures. Premature deterioration, cracked surfaces and a dull appearance can be caused by severe hot and cold, water and excess dryness.

* Spills on Leather
Unlike fabric seats, sudden spills on leather upholstery can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Leather upholstery must be maintained with protectant. Purchase protectant specially developed for leather automotive upholstery, and apply it regularly to preserve the supple feel and natural moisture of the leather. Your beautiful leather seats can easily become a sticky, grubby mess. Avoid build-up by wiping away surface residue and dust on a regular basis.

Automobiles are big investments, and maintaining your car will help retain its value. With proper automotive upholstery care, you'll be able to keep your automobile looking--and smelling--just like a new car.

About the Author

James Williams writes for several well-known web sites, on recreation tips and hobbies and recreation issues.
The Car Detailing Guide recommends Domains at Retail for your web site solutions!

Team Building for a Mobile Car Wash Business

Team Building for a Mobile Car Wash Business By Lance Winslow

Team= Together Everyone Accomplishes More or so the acronym says. We often hear about teams in sports, military, corporations and politics. But team dynamics can also be found in very low-tech businesses. Consider if you will a crew of mobile car washers or mobile fleet vehicle washers.

A crew of mobile car washers may have up to 4 people on the crew and a team of mobile fleet vehicle washers may have five or more on the crew and if they operate in an efficient manner like the sports team; the company will make it a lot more money and they will get each job done sooner so they can do more jobs.

One way to build a strong team on a mobile car wash business is to make sure the team leader is a high-energy person with some athletic experience. Once the crew starts egging each other on the real synergy can be developed and they can pick up the pace.

Having been in the mobile car wash business for over 27 years I can tell you when working with new franchisees that once the team got good working together it was incredible the number of cars that could be washed in a single day.

I can remember times where we would pull into a parking lot and our competition would be their detailing or washing a few cars and we might wash and wax some 15 cars and leave, while they were still working on two cars. Why, well together everyone accomplishes more. Consider this in 2006.

Lance Winslow is a retired Founder of a Franchising Company and promotes the Franchising Industry and Franchise Business Model at www.Franchising.org

If your thinking of offering car body work with your car washing business, check out my blog including posts about painting your own car rims.

12 Myths about Car Detailing

Take a look at this page I found discussing the 12 Myths about Car Detailing as said by Meguiars:

http://www.jtuned.com/content/templates/tune.aspx?articleid=389&zoneid=16

It's a good read and will remind you what not to do with car detailing!

Regards,MK
Get cheap domain registration at Domains at Retail, or learn about buying a new car.

Mothers 7240 California Gold Clay Bar System

Mothers 7240 California Gold Clay Bar System<img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=emenkiwebsolu-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B0002U2V1Y" alt="" style="border: medium none !

My car was covered with a stubborn deposit of dirt and grime that simply would not come off with a car wash. It seemed that the dirt and grime had gotten lodged in the paint and wouldn't budge no matter how hard I tried washing the car. After every car wash, I would run my fingers through the paint and it would still feel gritty.

That was when I learned about Mothers 07240 California Gold Clay Bar Paint Saving System Kit. The results were astounding! After using it, the paint no longer felt gritty but glassy-smooth. The paint was no longer dulled by contaminants and the car looked like it has a new coat of paint! I was immensely pleased with the results.

Unlike a lot of car polish or polishing compounds that use abrasion to strip away surface contaminants, auto clay simply picks up surface contaminants and locks them into the clay. The clay looks and feels exactly like plasticine (Play-doh) and it is used along with the included "lubricant" spray (actually, an auto soap that provide lots of suds -- like Meguiar's Gold Class -- will work equally well.)

Mind you, car polish still has its place in paint restoration because claying will not remove scratches; only a car polish or a polishing compound (harsher) can do that. And remember, always follow the claying with an application of wax to shield your paint from new contaminants. For the purpose of this article we questioned numerous detailing experts and other similar professionals as to what works best. Here are their best car care recommendations:

Start by using a garage or shaded area. The hot sun will make proper car care and cleaning hard, if not impossible and could be detrimental to your car's finish. Next thoroughly wet down the car. This will remove dirt and road debris which will cause scratches if you skip this step and start using a sponge and soap on the car. If it is a hot day, be sure to routinely wet the car so it does not dry suds or cleaning chemicals on it.

Next use a car wash solution, don't use general purpose detergents and cleaners that were never meant for car care and car washing. A car wash solution will not dry out your paint or strip and possibly remove protective coatings. A long armed, soft bristled wash brush will greatly reduce the time it takes to thoroughly clean your car. It will also make it easier on your back and muscles. A good quality brush can be cheaply obtained at Walmart for about $10-$15 - buy one, you will be glad you did. When you have finished washing the whole car, use a chamois to dry off your car. A chamois will remove water quickly and not leave lint which terry cloths are prone to do. Routinely washing your car will remove things like bird droppings, bugs and industrial fallout which are all detrimental to your car's paint and finish. If there is road tar or stubborn bugs left after washing you should use a bug and tar remover prior to waxing and polishing.

It is a good idea to follow washing with the application of a cleaner/polish. This will remove minor imperfections in the paint caused by the environment and sun damage, remove minor scratches, and provide a good surface for car wax or car polish. Follow the directions on the bottle. Basically you apply cleaner wax as you would wax - in a circular motion and you treat one area or panel at a time. Use modest pressure and then let dry to a whitish haze. Buff with a clean cloth towel and reapply as necessary.

Then you need to decide whether to use car wax or a polymer car polish. According to the experts, carnauba car wax has the deepest and wettest looking shine, but it is also the weakest protection for the harsh environment (acid rain, extreme temperature ranges, bird droppings, etc...). Car polish is easier to apply as it requires less effort to apply and remove. It will also last much longer (some have polymers and even Teflon and will last as long as 52 car washes after 1 application). Car polish will still give you that new car look and was the unanimous recommendation from our experts for any outdoor use (car wax was recommended mostly for car shows). Both car polish and car wax are applied in the same way and many come with a cloth or foam applicator. Apply in a small circular motion same as with the cleaner/polish. Car polish will go on easier and come off easier than car wax and requires only one coat for great protection in any climate. After allowing it to dry to a haze, buff it off, but use a microfiber towel as it will leave a smoother finish quicker and without any lint.

The above recommended steps for properly washing, waxing and polishing your car will leave you with the best shine, maximum protection, make your car last, and maintain its highest value. Remember, a little proper car care can and will go a long way.

About the Author
David Maillie specializes in automotive safety products and information. Many people use products that were never intended for their car and others use products and equipment that should only be used by properly trained professionals. Some never even wax or clean their cars. Then they wonder why their car is given a very low trade in figure at the dealer, or why their paint is dull and flaking.

For the purpose of this article we interviewed numerous professional automotive detailers and similar professionals. We asked them what products they used and for tips that consumers could use. They pretty much came back with the same advice:

Properly clean the car: This is very important as the use of harsh, non-automotive products can actually harm your cars finish and make it wear quicker. Spray the car first and get it wet. Use the water to spray off dirt and other contaminates that will scratch your car if you immediately start using a sponge and water first. Also do not clean your car in the sun on a hot day. Do make sure you use warm water as it works best to loosen contaminates. After getting your car wet, use an automotive car wash solution and add to water in a bucket. Follow the directions on the bottle. Then wash the car. You will find it easier if you use a long handled wash brush (most auto parts stores have these). Be sure to wash and rinse in sections so the car wash soap doesn't dry before being washed off. Then using terry cloth towels or chamois, dry the car off. Expert tip: use a squeegee. It is much faster and easier.

Remove stubborn contaminants: There will be dirt, bugs, tar, etc... that will be left after washing. There are many products that are made specifically for removing these items you're your paint and car. The resounding answer from the experts was Meguiar's bug and tar cleaner. Remove all the contaminants and follow the directions (some products can remove paint if not used correctly). Expert tip: 3M and other manufacturers make a plastic shield that can be applied over areas of your car's paint like bumpers and behind the tires to protect from contaminants and rock chips.

Use a cleaner polish: This will remove any left over stubborn contaminates like ground in bug splatter on your painted bumper, acid rain etching, bird drop spots, and minor scratches. Use a circular motion, just like for wax. Follow the directions for that particular cleaner polish (some require a wet or damp applicator pad others don't). Do the car one section at a time and use a clean section of cloth to buff once dry. Most cleaner polishes will dry to a whitish haze. Be sure to buff off all the haze and residue from the cleaner polish. When done the car finish will be really smooth. Expert tip: for deeper scratches, contaminants, etc... you can use an orbital buffer or polisher to apply the cleaner polish. Be careful and use low rpm's (under 2000) anything above this and you risk burning the paint.

Apply several coats of polish or wax: There is a big difference between car wax and car polish. Car wax is usually a blend of carnauba and other waxes which will give a deep, wet look and new car shine. It comes in both a liquid and a paste, and it will not last as long as a car polish. Car wax is also less effective in high temperatures and can actually melt on hot areas like the hood. Car polish is a polymer blend usually with no wax. Car polishes can last 1 year between coats and is very durable protection for your paint. The experts recommend a car polish with Teflon in it for maximum protection and durability. The experts love the extra, deeper shine from car wax, but all agreed it was better suited for car shows. Whichever you choose, they are both applied the same way. Apply in a circular motion and let it dry to a haze. Then buff dry with a clean terry cloth or microfiber towel. Expert tip: Don't use regular towels or diaper cloths as they can trap dirt particles and similar and leave scratch patterns in your finish. A microfiber cloth works best for removing dried car polish or car wax haze. 2 to 3 coats are recommended for maximum protection and shine. A good rule is to reapply the car polish or car wax at least 2 times per year. Expert tip: Apply car wax, not car polish (as car polish will leave streaks and smudges on glass), to your windows. Do one light coat and completely buff it off. The car wax will work better than the leading brand glass treatment for rain (it will also quite your windshield wipers).

About the Author
David Maillie is an alumni of Cornell University and specializes in automotive safety products and information. Its a perfect sprucing up curriculum and is not just about cleaning, washing and polishing the exterior of the car. It involves a lot of tidying of the interior as well. Routine car detailing is sure to prove beneficial for your car. Every penny you spend for the detailing job (if you go for professional detailing services) and every effort you put in (if you decide to do it on your own) will go on to prevent damages to the vehicle and restore its good looks. The car detailing job is not all that complicated and you will not need to pick up any special skill or technique for it. The first detailing tip suggested by most car manufacturers and professionals providing car detailing services is to start cleaning from inside. This is essentially a three-step plan involving vacuuming, cleaning and conditioning. Follow it up with cleaning the car's windows. Some glass cleaner and a clean towel are what you need to clean the windows. Do not ever use used rags to clean the windows!

Once you have covered the interior, continue with the exterior. Start with the dirtiest part of cars - the wheels. There are two different ways for cleaning the wheels. You may either opt for the most prevalent 'soap and wheel brush method of cleaning' or go for 'spray on, rinse off' chemicals. Anyway, whatever be your choice of wheel cleaning method, you need to assure that there is not a speck of salt, dust or debris stuck in the wheel for that can lead to corrosion.

Following the car wash product manufacturer's directions will give you the maximum satisfaction with washing the car's body. Give the vehicle a thorough bath and then lather with sponge and soap solution. Always keep in mind to work your way downwards from the top. Rub the body in soft circular motions and rinse off. Soak dry with a soft towel.

Getting down to the polishing job, you can accomplish it with the applicator supplied with the wax or go about it with a damp cotton cloth. Once you have covered the full body, start buffing, again advancing gently.

Some car detailing tips that will help you avoid any damage to the car are: 1)Never go about the detailing job under direct sun or when the vehicle is hot 2)Never use harsh chemical washes, rough clothes and other abrasive kits

Wrap up your car detailing act by cleaning and polishing the headlights and the metallic fittings.

About the Author
David Maillie holds numerous patents including his recently awarded patent for headlight repair, cleaner and restorer. One was to paint my wiper blade arms as the black paint has peeled off leaving an unsightly silver metal behind. Two was to clean and polish up the wiper arm cowel / cover that dulled to a grey instead of the shiny black.

Today I started with polishing up the wiper arm cowel / cover. The wiper arms will be another body work project I attempt.

Here are the tools of my attack:

Meguiar's PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner & Polish

Mothers Back-to-Black Trim Treatment 8 oz.

With the Meguiars PlastX, I used a terry cloth towel (not pictured). The steps I took were to apply a small amount of the Meguiars PlastX onto a terry cloth towel and from there proceed in a back and forth motion over small areas at a time.

Here is a first picture of my wiper arm cowel / cover before receiving treatment. You notice along the middle the dull grey appearance.

The bottom of the following picture has been polished with Meguiars PlastX, while the top of the cowel in the picture has not. You notice the bottom has more depth in color and appears to be more of the original factory black.

Another view shows the bottom of the picture treated and has a shine to it, while the other is dull grey and no shine on it at all.

In this picture the top half has been treated with the PlastX polish, while the bottom is untreated (as you can see the dull grey color with white markings)

Here is an excellent up close picture of the untreated and treated portions of the wiper arm cowel. The left is dull with no shine, and the right looks as it should be.

After finishing polishing with the Meguiars PlastX on the entire cover, I then proceeded to do the same with the Mothers Back to Black. Apply with a back and forth motion, and buff it after.

Here are final shots of the Wiper Arm Cowel / Cover, showing its true natural black color with a shine as it was meant to be. No more faded to dull grey appearance. I'm pretty happy with the outcome.

Regards,
Michael Kralj
Learn about painting a lip kit in my other blog.

Automotive Washing Detailing Tips

Automotive Washing Detailing Tips

Here are three tips to keep in mind when Washing and Detailing your car:

1. Where do you start?

First, I would just like to expose you to many of the common brand names out there carrying products to assist in cleaning your car and detailing it. They are:

- Mothers
- Meguiars
- 3M
- Eagle
- Turtle Wax
- Armor All
- Simoniz

Of course there can be various other brands found in your store as well. I personally, due to availability in stores where I live, purchase either Mothers or Meguiars products mostly. I also have some 3M and Eagle products, and a couple if any of the final three listed there. Having created my other blog about Buying a Car, I decided to establish this blog in regards to Detailing your Car.

Once you have purchased a car, there is nothing like keeping it in Showroom floor condition. How can you achieve this while driving through every day conditions of dust, dirt, road tar and the ever dreaded bird droppings that get etched onto your car?

There are many steps and many products that will help keep your car looking wonderful. I will explore the different products you can find on the market, and give personal reviews of the products I have tried. Also, I plan to write some tips and tricks I use to detail my car, and also the steps you should take in caring for your cars exterior and interior.

Stay tuned and feel free to leave comments on anything I say to give an alternative perspective.

Regards,
Michael Kralj
